Riding Horses Is Tiring Work

Okay.  Perhaps I got a little carried away with today’s blog title.  You know what they say, when you get knocked off your horse, it’s important to get back in the saddle again.  Well, today was “saddle up” day for me.  I was out of the office from Tuesday through Thursday this week with an awful sinus infection.  I am still on antibiotics but, since I have been fever free for twenty-four hours, thought I would go back to work today, at least for the morning Mass and for a funeral Mass.

By the time I was reading the Gospel at the morning Mass, my body said to me, “What the heck are you doing here?”  I began sweating and my sinuses let go with all sorts of post-nasal drip that caused me to begin coughing and choking at the Gospel.  It took a cough drop, glass of water, and measured reading to get through the rest of the passage.  The homily was not much better.

By the end of the homily, I had regained my voice.  But I began to sweat and feel really weak.  By the end of Mass, I was ready to call it quits for the day.  Oh, but I couldn’t.  I still had a funeral to do.

I set up for the funeral, went to my office and guzzled all sorts of water, and rested.  I made it through the funeral without any voice hitches, though I was coughing up a fair amount of the time.  That’s a part of the sinus infection.  I was glad that I made it through the funeral.  When it was over, I had office work to complete, catching up on some things from the past few days.

I finally got back to the house around 2:00 p.m. and have stayed there for the afternoon and evening.  I want to rest up so that I’m in decent shape for tomorrow morning’s Mass and, more importantly, for tomorrow morning’s First Confession for our third grade parishioners.

Life is tough; but, you just have to saddle up and keep riding!  Well, maybe I’ll rest first.
