Symbiotic Relationships

It has always amazed me how nature has a way of working with itself to accomplish its many goals.  At this time of year, flowers begin to bud.  In order to bloom, some of them need help.  Take the peony, for example.  It has a beautiful flower packed tight into a ball.  In order to open, the flower’s “seam” has to be opened externally.

How does nature take care of this problem?  The flower creates a sweet fluid that ants crave.  They cover the heads of the flowers and chew away at the outer covering in order to get the fluid.  From there, the flower is ready for business.

In another week, our flowers will be open and splendid because the ants are giving the peonies a helping hand.  Well, a helping jaw.  🙂
