Any Day Can Be Thanksgiving Day

Last night I had the 5:30 p.m. Vigil Mass for the Holy Day of the Immaculate Conception.  This morning, I had the 6:30 and 9:00 a.m. Masses.  At 11:30 a.m., I had a staff meeting.  Then, I went to my brother’s house for lunch.

We were not able to get together at Thanksgiving so he made a Thanksgiving meal for us:  turkey, dressing, gravy, rice, and sweet potatoes.  I have three words to describe the meal:  Yum, yum, yum!

He has not cooked much in the past several years because his wife was very ill and in assisted living.  He hadn’t had the time for it.  She passed away last year during Holy Week and this was the first time he made his famous turkey in six years.  I tell you one thing, he hasn’t lost his touch.

And now, both he and I have leftovers for several meals throughout the remainder of the week.  And it works out perfectly because he likes white meat and I like dark meat.  So each of us took a half of the turkey.

When I finished eating, I looked at him and said, “And now, for dessert.”  He looked a little alarmed and said that he hadn’t made dessert.  I said, “Oh, yes, you have” and reached for a second helping of the sweet potatoes.  He laughed and even joined me for “dessert”.  His sweet potatoes are to die for.  Literally.  As a diabetic, I probably took myself to the brink.  🙂

Thanks for a great lunch, Steve, and for even better conversation.
