It never ceases to amaze me. Just when I think that I have heard it all and that nothing else can possibly surprise me, I find out how wrong I am.
Yesterday I was listening to Chicago Public Radio and I heard about a new product developed in Switzerland and, right now, available only in Switzerland: the Hotshot. What, you may ask, is the Hotshot?
It is a condom specifically designed for boys aged 12-14.
It is smaller in diameter so that it has less chance of slipping off while engaging in sexual activity.
Even though the age of consent in Switzerland is sixteen, it is not illegal for children to engage in sexual activity as long as there is no more than three years of age difference between the two.
Many groups in Switzerland were clamoring for the smaller condom because they state that too many children and early teens are engaging in sexual activity and they need protection.
Part of their rationale is that children and preteens do not understand what sex is all about nor about the ramifications of their sexual activity.
Okay. However, if they do not understand, what does the manufacture of a smaller sized condom going to do in regard to helping them understand?
We live in such an age of self-gratification that too many people, it seems, are afraid to speak out and say, "This is wrong." We are afraid of trampling on other people's feelings and on other people's rights.
But remaining silent does nothing to help the root cause of so many ills in our world.
I should think that we would have learned that painful lesson many years ago when abortion was legalized in our country. It may be my opinion only, but I truly believe that one of the reasons that it was legalized was that too many people did not speak up against the evils of abortion in time to stop the legalization of it.
We are loathe to speak up against capital punishment, doctor-assisted suicide, war, terror, starvation, infanticide, and a whole plethora of evils plaguing the world.
It is time to say, "Enough. This is wrong."
Will we stand up and be counted? or continue to accept what is happening around us?
