I took a cart load of things to my condo again today. This moving real slow is great. In the past, moving to a new assignment, I would have one day — the day of the assignment change — to move. One day. That was it.
Getting ready to retire and already owning a residence, on the other hand, gives me the luxury of moving at my pace. I pack up a couple of suitcases of things from the house or a cart of things from the office and take them to my condo.
When I get there, I unpack everything right away and place it exactly where I had planned. There is no one time move day and mountains of boxes waiting to be unpacked. Instead, I have the luxury of moving around my schedule.
It will help the new pastor as well because I plan on being out of my quarters by Easter. That will give maintenance and custodial time to come in and repair cracks in walls and prime and paint the walls. Then, as long as the place is open and ready, the future pastor can do what I am presently doing and start moving some of his things in early so that he is not as overwhelmed on assignment day.
My condo is really starting to look like a home now. Last year, it looked like rooms with potential futures. Now, with pictures on the walls and lots of things already in place, it looks (and feels) like home. I’m looking forward to calling it just that on July 1st.
