Happy Anniversary, Deacons!

“At that time, as the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.  So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, ‘It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table.  Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.’  The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism.  They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them.”  (Acts 6:1-6)

And, thus, the diaconate was born.  Tonight, at a special Mass at St. James the Less in Highland, the deacons of the Diocese of Gary celebrated their ordination anniversaries.

We are so blessed to have deacons in our diocese engaging in a variety of ministries.  Many of them are assisted by their wives as well.  Thank you deacons (and wives) for giving yourselves in service to the Lord’s people in the Church.

Happy Anniversary to all the deacons.  However, in a special way, I wish a heartfelt Happy Anniversary to the four deacons who serve us at St. Thomas More Parish:  (from left to right) Deacons Dave Kapala, Joe Stodola, Dan Zurawski, and Napoleon Tabion.

Two of our deacons were highlighted in the program this evening for celebrating their 15th Anniversary:  Deacons Joe Stodola and Napoleon Tabion.
