Second Cruise Day And, Yes, I’m Stupid

Okay, let’s get this out of the way first: I am stupid. First Class. Unbelievably. Simple as that.

Enough?

I am on my annual four day cruise to the Bahamas. I generally take it after Easter week has concluded. It is the same thing every year and, generally, on the same ship every year: the Royal Caribbean Enchantment of the Seas. (Next year, it will be on the Mariner of the Seas. I want to try that ship out and it cruises from Port Canaveral instead of Miami.)

Every year, we stop at Nassau. Every year I get off and walk through downtown, up a steep hill, and over to a local candy store. I buy treats for my cabin attendant and my waiter and assistant waiter.

None of that is my proof for being stupid. This is: every year, I come back with a sunburn. Why?  Because in all of these years, I haven’t remembered my hat or to use sunscreen.

So, tonight, as I type this, I am looking at a red face in the mirror. By tomorrow it should be a darker tan and by the time I return home Friday night, it will probably be gone or, at the most, a light tan.

There was a live production tonight. The ship’s singers and dancers are really fantastic and they deserve a lot of applause. I gave them a standing ovation.

I really felt for them, though. They put their hearts into their production and the theatre was only a third full. I was surprised. But, then again today is a full day in Nassau. People do not have to be back on board until 11:00 p.m. so there are a lot of people still on the island.

Speaking of islands, tomorrow we arrive at Coco Cay, Royal Caribbean’s private island. It’s supposed to be cloudy and 82 degrees. The weather this week has been in the mid-80’s. It was quite a shock coming from back home where we have not had a decent spring yet.

More tomorrow.
