Thus It Begins

This evening, we celebrated the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.  At this Mass, we remember that, the night before He died, Jesus instituted the Eucharist in order that we might have food for the journey on our way to the Kingdom.  We remember that the Eucharist is what makes us one, the Source and Summit of Christian Life.

At the Mass, we also commemorated the “mandatum”, the washing of the feet.  That simple, yet powerful, exchange taught the disciples about what Jesus’ leadership was all about:  service.  If they want to be leaders as well, Jesus indicated, they had to become servant leaders.

We have seen all too often what happens when our leaders demand to be served instead of serving us.  We need to make sure that we lead by serving one another, acknowledging the needs of others and ministering to their needs.

This evening, I prayed for my flock and I prayed, as well, that I would be given the grace and humility that I need to be a servant to the people entrusted to me by my bishop.

The Triduum begins.  Next step, Good Friday.
