We Catholics believe that the Blessed Virgin Mary was born without the stain of original sin. We call that the Immaculate Conception. One of the consequences of original sin is corruptibility, that is, our bodies will decay and we will return to the dust from which we came.
Because Mary was preserved from the stain of original sin, her body would not undergo corruption. Therefore, we believe that, at the end of her days on earth, Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven. We call that the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and we celebrate that Solemnity today.
Thank you, Mary, for your humble “yes” to God’s will. Ask your Son to give us the grace that we need to say “yes” as well!
