Where Did You Go?

Some people texted or emailed wondering where I went because my blog stopped suddenly last Monday, August 10th.

I didn’t go anywhere.

The power did.

On Tuesday, August 11th, right around Noon, a historic derecho came roaring through Northwest Indiana wreaking havoc.  It had sustained winds of around 100 mph (derechos, if you don’t know, have often been called “land hurricanes”) and even concealed tornadoes.  An EF1 tornado accompanied the winds that came through Munster and an EF2 tornado roared through St. John.

When all was said and done, it looked like Munster and the surrounding areas were part of a battle zone where we had lost the war.  Trees were downed and covered houses and roads.  Trees ripped down power lines.  The winds tore down power transmission poles.  And everything went quiet except for the continuous sound of chain saws.

Since last Tuesday, emergency crews have been going around the area prioritizing damage and writing up needs on work tickets so that power could be restored.  Today is Day 6 and we — here in a part of my subdivision in Munster — finally had our power turned on.  There are still close to 200,000 residents without power.

Pray for those who still do not have power, please.  And pray even more for those who are working so hard to restore our power and, thus, some semblance of normalcy to our lives.

More tomorrow.
